Instead, this is WrestleMania-sized improvement for a series truly hitting its stride.įormats: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC Overall, this feels like another marked improvement on the year before, with 2K and Visual Concepts avoiding the trap of many annual franchises, which can often feel like little more than a cosmetic upgrade. The effort to make WWE 2K24 feel right was not lost on us. It’s a fantastic match that gives high hopes for the other new bouts coming to the game. To win the match, you have to wear your opponent down enough that when you open the doors and toss them in, you’re in a position to complete a button-mashing mini-game to shut each door in turn. Getting up on the roof is a blast too, and it’s great to know that as well as throwing your opponent off you can hit all sorts of finishers in the space. It also has plenty of scope for use as a weapon, whether it’s slamming your opponent’s limbs in the door or throwing them into the sides. The ambulance – which gets its own entrance with sirens and red lights once both wrestlers are in the ring – is a great set piece. The ability to change the camera to face the ramp (available in any match) is particularly fun here, with the superstars racing down to the ring. Given how a Super Finisher is incredibly difficult to kick out off (not impossible, but taking one means even your resiliency boost is null and void), it was a welcome surprise to see the AI actually reverse these a couple of times, ensuring they won’t be spam-able.Īs part of our hands-on, we also got a peak at the Royal Rumble, which felt more engaging and smoother than years past. or Riptide as Bianca Belair or Rhea Ripley, to hitting Cody Rhodes’ Triple CrossRhodes combination and Undertaker’s Leaping Tombstone or Hell’s Gate submission, these moves – which require three Finisher slots to hit – are devastating. Having been at WrestleMania 39 in person, it was incredible to see the attention to detail for SoFi Stadium, from the Hollywood staging to the glass roof and giant ‘tron.įrom the entrances and moves themselves, right down to the sweat on the wrestler’s body, everything looks crisper and more lifelike than ever.Ĭody’s CrossRhodes Super Finisher triggered a special filter for the whole animation (Picture: 2K/Metro)įrom hitting an Avalanche K.O.D. Given this year’s cover star, we got started with Roman and Cody, and – as is often the case with 2K’s WWE output – the visuals blew us away. Ultimate Warrior from WrestleMania V, as well as Rhea Ripley vs. With Corey Graves handling the commentary this time, and providing an introduction to set the scene, each match gets plenty of context to help set the secne for anyone who might’ve missed the bouts in real life, or to simply serve as a reminder for anyone reliving the classic matches.įor this hands-on session, we were able to play through three matches: Rick Rude vs. This year’s Showcase is all about WrestleMania (Picture: 2K/Metro) ![]()
